The story of the National Library Dositej Obradović in Stara Pazova begins in the summer of 1878 with the establishment of the Serbian Reading Room, the oldest cultural institution of the local Serbs. The reading room was tasked with meeting the need for reading of an ever-increasing number of citizens, but also for securing the new, future readers. Later on, both the cultural and artistic societies would also work on the other reading rooms, two of which should be mentioned as the most important ones:The reading room of the Serbian craftsmen and the Slovak reading room.
